I can't even imagine how terrible it must feel to just have to stand there and watch your race vehicle burn down to nothing.

A few years ago I actually looked into the entry process for Dakar. You have to run representative events in your local region to qualify and then I think it was something like $12k for a bike entry. This was some years ago, mind you so it has probably gone up. I was kind of 25% serious about giving it a try. It seems like a hell of an adventure and a worthy pub story wherever you would go.

I know that there are factory teams and sponsored drivers who run this, but are there very many privateers? That might explain why this guy is so upset. He's probably out a major chunk of change in addition to the loss of his ride.

Yeah, a good number of the bikes and quads are private. The nice thing about running one of those is they will pick up your bike if it breaks. You have to go out and get cars yourself.
If you have Netflix there is a good documentary about Charlie Boorman's run in Dakar. It is called Race to Dakar. Charlie is the guy who partnered with ewan mcgregor on a ride around the world. Long Way Round. Totally worth a watch as well.
